We need a design for our blog entries, and want to use this oportunity to look into our color scheme and other elements.
We are looking for evolution, not revolution.
This is our current design:
You are invited to look at our fonts, header, footer, right column and color scheme in particular, but any other ideas and suggestions are also very welcome.
We like our design simple and lean.
Our philosophy is that design should be intuitive. We want as few static elements and labels as possible. A photo is a photo, there is no need to write «Photo» above it. The same goes for other elements.
The purpose of doing a redesign now is to make our entries easier to read, which means we want to emphasize the content of each entry rather than the elements across entries.
Our bloggers are scientists, lawyers and academics wanting to reach a broader audience, so the design should appeal to both groups: Our bloggers and the broad public.
In addition to the elements already on the site, we would also like to have these elements in the new design:
# Story lists with images in 100 percent width in the right column. Something similar to buzzfeed.com, but a little less splashy.
# Related stories with images in the bottom of the blog entry, possibly as a vertical slider.
# Previous and next story in the bottom of the blog entry, similar to that of theverge.com, which will alternate with the related stories slider.
# A facts / info box where we can use images, text and bulleted lists to display encyclopedic facts related to the entry. The header of the box should be like a story title - i.e, it will be dynamic, no static text like «Facts» or «Info».
We would like our menu and header to be compressed from todays version. We attach a suggestion to this brief, but we are open for other ideas.
