michael uQ got their new web page design by running a design contest:
Design ProveIt, a crowdsource website for researchers who care about facts

Community & Non-Profit
A community-driven website where users can investigate controversial topics/events. (i.e. Conspiracy theories). All content is generated by users itself. 'Are you arguing about a topic? Why don't you: "Prove It!". Extra: The site contains a few main data types: Topics, Facts and Sources. It is mainly based around facts and not users comments, the only opinion we want from users is to select a Conclusion. The site is made with AngularJS and is still under development.
To start off, I like blue, more or less this color: #3498db, but not mandatory. And I believe a light theme might be best for displaying a lot of data. Also, I might use the full-width of the page, but not mandatory. This website will contain a lot of data, as I am a developer I just printed the data out on the page, I still don't have an idea on how to display the data in a good way. I hope you can help in that way. I cannot find inspiration from other websites. No big stock photographs, only thumbnails for topics/facts/sources. Illustrations may be used. We do not have a logo, yet.
Homepage: - A news style page displaying mainly Topics, also Facts. "Breaking News/Highlighted/Popular/Recommended related topics" are some of the components that will be displayed. Maybe each item could have a thumbnail. "Breaking News" and "Highlighted" are more important and should be displayed bigger than the other components. - On the top of the page a big clear search field where you can search topics&facts in one search field. - Login/Registration or Profile info at the top of the page with a dropdown menu - I was thinking of a carousel at the top of the page displaying important topics - Each item should display the title and data about the topic: how many facts, thumbs up, etc. The site is about data, a lot of useful data. Maybe display a pie diagram showing the top conclusions of a topic. Topic page: - Basic info about the Topic: title, tags, category, votes, related topics etc.. - List of Facts, sources don't need to be separate from Facts. Users can search in this list using filters. One Fact has multiple Sources. - Conclusions: conclusions created by the user, a clear illustration/diagram would be useful to clearly see the most popular - Info about the Thumbs up: this is a vote up system like Reddit. It means 'agree', 'approve' or 'like'. - A small activity/feed where the user can see changes to the Topic: 'User added a new fact', 'User added a new tag: Sometag', 'Removed a fact. Reason: Irrelevant', etc - Buttons to easily add: Facts, child/parent Topics, Conclusion, Tag.
What to avoid
No stock photographs, please.
More pages to follow when I find a good design. The site is still under development, so all you see in the screenshots and my description are just ideas.
