Adventia got their new web page design by running a design contest:
Design a portal details page for an app that will help run music festivals across the world!

Entertainment & The Arts
This will be a membership driven web application to allow bands and festivals to connect, and share documents regarding performing at festivals. So it will be part social media feed, part 'Google Docs' style document management system, part information portal. This has a very specific audience - the people that put on music festivals, so think festival promoters, tour managers, production staff, and also bands /artists of all shapes and sizes, including the most high profile in the world right now.
Very much so. Needs to have functionality, simplicity and ease of use central to the design. Also needs to scale to mobile well, probably even mobile first design, so we're going to need to see two breakpoints (<768 and > 1200) - I can worry about everything in between. The design can't be too fussy or too overpowering, needs to be as simple as a social media feed. Any intricate design in this probably won't work. These people won't be expert application users, they will need to get in and out quickly so wayfinding and information hierarchy / navigation is key.
There will be one page to be designed as part of this contest - the festival profile page, as this is the most complex. However I would expect that we will engage the winner to design more pages post-contest. I've found having multi-page contests are counter productive, as I can get a winner on one page and a different one for the other. The profile page has a read only section (festival details), a few data tables with calls to action, and a facebook/linked.in style newsfeed about activity associated with the festival. This will be on a perpetual/infinite scroll basis. This will give an at-a-glance view of activity from the festival's perspective by the bands, when they change or upload files etc. Navigation and general layout is only indicative in wires, feel free to experiment with this. I'm as much interested in your general page furniture choices (logo, navigation, colour choices) as I am the treatment of the specific page assets. I've also attached the dashboard / landing page for reference, I don't need this designed at this stage, but obviously it will probably end up being a subset of the feed on the festivals page. More for your context really.
What to avoid
Trying to make it look like a website rather than a web application. Only experienced web app designers should really go for this as I know it's a very different designing style.
The art here is to make the complex simple. I will reject overly fussy designs, it needs to present a lot of information in a clean, non-overwhelming way. Good use of colour and whitespace is key to these designs. There will be no need for imagery in this design other than placeholders, i.e. band avatar images etc. In the application, all these images will be user-sourced. I have uploaded the AI and EPS versions of the chosen logo. At the moment it's mono, black on white. You have licence to use this logo in any way you like to support your page layout - reversed onto white, different colour, or the two layouts of the logo. Whatever works for your design. If you need an alternate file type, let me know. At the moment I have no preference for colours or themes other than it needs to be a functional app for the professional music industry, so bear that in mind with your choices, and as mentioned before, the simple layout done well will be the one that wins, I have a gut feel! Just a note that I'm an experienced User Experience Designer / Web Developer so I'm very vocal about what I like / don't like, but hopefully this will be a bonus for you as a designer as I can speak your language hopefully very effectively in terms of critique / direction. I immediately know what works and doesn't work in an interface, what I lack is your creativity! My input is your output so I will try and give as much detailed feedback for designs I consider serious contenders as I can. I have a feeling when I see the winning design for the first time I will just know, as I have before on 99 designs. Good luck everyone! :-)
