kotango is a global social networking and dating site for the ethically non-monogamous community.
in general, i'm looking for something light, clean, classy, modern, fun, safe -- as stated above. in this light, i think a light color scheme with strategic use of color is the way to go, but i'm not the designer and am relying on the designers for creative ways of achieving these goals.
if you had to identify two sites that we hope to combine into one for this vertical, they would be Facebook and OKcupid. although the primary goal of the site is to provide a single destination for this global community to share information and resources, many users also use the site as an 'organic dating' environment where they can easily connect with like-minded people. the problem with most dating sites is that it usually give men the license to misbehave or act under the assumption that others are there for the same reason they are. we want to avoid this issue and create a community that is clearly safe for women and which will not tolerate unwanted solicitation (that said, this does not mean we want pink and purple color schemes). it is also important to note that many of our users access the site on a mobile or tablet device, so a responsive design that adapts to a user's screen size is important. some of the emotions or impressions uses should have when they login are: modern but classy easy to use welcoming and safe fun and adventurous when users register and arrive at the home page, they will see a display of the three core features: dynamic listing of user information (like facebook's 'wall') events near them or (in the case where there aren't any) the closest events discussion posts by users in members' only forums i'm providing our current layout for your review, but this is only a guideline and you should feel free to suggest the design layout that is most compelling and clear that showcases the features within the context of the emotional tenor captured by the words above (modern but classy, …). our tagline, 'it takes more than two', is not included in the mock but could be associated with the logo or featured more prominently in the header. the second page is the user profile page. the page is currently made up of five different general categories of data: 1) basic information about the user (gender, location, relationship status) 2) more detailed information about the user (interests and hobbies, height, lifestyle habits 3) sexual interests (totally optional for users who explicitly state that they're interested in dating and meeting others) 4) narrative information (this is where users write to add texture to their profiles, telling stories about travel, life experiences, and answering a wide variety of optional questions) 5) wall data that displays posts by the user and other events/actions that allow others to see the interaction a user has with the community. users have the option to include dating-relevant information on their profile or not, so the length and type of questions answered can vary by user. all of a users' posts will also appear (ideally) atop their page to show what their most recent activity is. you should feel free to expand on the concept here if you feel other information (event-related, discussion posts made, friends in common with viewer, identity on FB, etc.). feel free to change the layout to best meet the need of creating a page that is dynamic and engaging. of course one of the main actions users will take on this page is to message the particular user. the third page is the splash page that unregistered users first see. in addition to the brand guidelines expressed above, the page should convey: 1) what you can do at kotango and what users should expect to get out of the site (local events, meet and talk with people like them, fun and adventure) 2) a quick tutorial via an animation 3) clear instructions to logon.
What to avoid
it should not suggest sex: no silhouettes or anything cheesy.
be creative here. particularly if you have some experience in the social networking and dating space. keep in mind that events are an important piece, as are discussions and, to a lesser extent, groups. most of all, it's got to be clear what you want users to do and it's got to feel fun and safe and people-centric.
