Creative Tarot card art for print on demand merch
Check out butchtheshop's Other clothing or merchandise contest…
I run a niche shopify Print on demand store that focuses on selling wall art and clothing that depicts different interpretations of Tarot Card Art. My target audience is 18-35 new age/spritual enthusiasts that would buy tasteful wall art.
What's your vision?
I am looking for a designer to choose a tarot card from the following gallery of high resolution scans of the Rider Waite Tarot Deck from the early 1900's (public domain) and turn it into a marketable design for wall art home decor, and/or t shirts and other print on demand products. Bonus points if the design is able to scale to different products. I hope to find a design style that can be applied to 10 other cards to become a "series" of tarot cards sharing the same design. Im hoping the art will be tasteful, elegant, and interesting/engaging to create an impulse buy. When this contest is over I will extend an offer to the winner of the contest to do 5-10 more cards in the same style at a commission of $25 each. Keep this in mind when you are designing so that you can quickly apply the same coloring/style to more cards to create a series. I am not expecting masterpieces, I am more looking at scaling your style into a marketable series. I am open to complete overhauls of the tarot art but what I'm really expecting is for you to use the existing line art, and use your own color/design creativity. Very creative departures from the original color themes is OK, but I'm also open to a completely neutral "restoration" of colors from the source material. The ultimate goal is to create something marketable. Don't be afraid to lean into pop culture territory for these cards. If you are aware of any trends in the hypebeast streetwear movement, or modern art trends, pop art trends and any kind of trending color palettes; Use them. I think connecting with these modern trends could be a way to relate to the customer on a different level. I know this might venture a little bit away from "elegant" but nonetheless lets let some creativity flow. If i like more than one designer who didn't win the contest I will also be open to hiring others to make different series' in different styles for my store. I'm trying to provide variety in my tarot art offerings, just as there is variety in the styles of tarot art when you compare from deck to deck. I AM GOING TO BUY SOME LOSER SUBMISSIONS FOR $25 PER DESIGN. There will be lots of winners. I've set aside a separate budget for buying other designs. So don't be discouraged if you don't think you can "win" the actual contest. I need the file images to be scaled up to be able to print on large canvases up to 24 X 36" I understand the scaling process can be challenging when starting with a small source image. I expect you to overcome this and for the design to be sharp and print ready. Keep in mind the default Print on demand canvas sizes/ aspect ratios. When you provide your final submission please let me know what size/aspect ratio your design would best present on. Tarot cards have a strange aspect ratio that doesn't match the canvas sizes exactly, so I expect you to be creative in making it present properly on a canvas. I will provide some references to some tarot card art that I like, and feel free to us them as inspiration for your artwork.
Here are links to the source material. There are 4 different decks that vary slightly in their scan quality, design and coloring but have the overall same line art. Choose any card that interests you, and that you think would be highly marketable. I know that some of the Major Arcana cards are very popular, but you can also find cards in the "suits" that have some great appeal. Here's the links: http://muzendo.jp/blog/?p=22 http://muzendo.jp/blog/?p=21 http://muzendo.jp/blog/?p=20 http://muzendo.jp/blog/?p=19 I'm also providing some photos to some design choices that other people have made into tarot card art that I really loved/ seem scalable to create a series. Feel encouraged to draw inspiration from them. I especially love some of the color gradient work with a completely different palette than the source material. Imitation of this style is encouraged. Also open to black and white interpretations. Get creative and just remember this is primarily for home wall art decor and apparel. "will someone want this piece hung on their wall or on a shirt?" is a good question to ask yourself. I've provided some interesting art that I like, But I have a feeling if i give you creative freedom you will probably surprise me with something I like even more. Feel free to take some risks.
