Entertainment & The Arts
I write and publish mainstream and literary novels.
What's your vision?
This project will produce illustrations for a bookmark and a bookplate, thematically linked to a novel that has elements of the modern and the medieval. I'm envisioning something that has artistic roots in the Unicorn Tapestries, illuminated manuscripts, and certain Romantic depictions of the medieval like Waterhouse's Lamia and the Soldier. I want something that is visually rich in the way the Unicorn Tapestries are with similar stylized qualities to the figures, but with modern elements incorporated. Medieval elements that could be used: knight, lion, dragon, tower, sword, phoenix, Melusine. Possible modern elements: guns, marijuana leaf, stacks of cash, pit bull, redheaded woman. One side of the bookmark will be a full-color graphic, and the reverse side of the bookmark will have the book's title and a phrase related to the book. This text would be ideal for the use of illuminated letters and medieval style text. The text side will also need a space for a graphic of the book's cover. The title of the book is The Reckless Oath We Made, and the phrase for the reverse of the bookmark is "Lay first the foundation stone. Then upon it, lay the next stone. Up and up, one stone, then another, til thou hast built a tower to keep thee and thine safe." The bookplate will be need to be much less detailed and should have a large blank field to allow for personalization/signature. Standard size for bookmarks is 2" x 6". Standard size for bookplates is 3" x 4".
Please look at the images I've uploaded to see samples of the Unicorn Tapestries and illuminated letters.
