Who are you known as?
Legal Council for Health Justice
Tell us a bit about who you are and the people you reach
The Legal Council for Health Justice is the umbrella organization over three legal projects: the AIDS Legal Council of Chicago (http://www.aidslegal.com) (“ALCC”), the Chicago Medical-Legal Partnership for Children (“CMLPC”), and the SSI Homeless Outreach Project, all of which provide free legal services for persons in the Chicago metropolitan area who are affected by mental and physical health challenges.
ALCC was founded 27 years ago in rapid response to the AIDS/HIV crisis, which left many people without access to health care, subjected them to discrimination, and marginalized them from conventional benefits available to people with disabilities as a result of the stigmatization that often impacts people with HIV. CMLPC began in 2000 to work with hospitals and clinics to identify and resolve the health-harming legal needs of vulnerable children and families. SSI Homeless Outreach was founded in 2007 as a new way to help individuals who are homeless with severe mental illness access health care, housing and economic security. These three “legal care” projects came together in 2014 when ALCC absorbed the other two projects from another non-profit organization in order to create synergies among related projects and to ensure the sustainability of each of the projects through solid financial stewardship.
Each of these three projects will retain its individual identity in the new organization, and the new name is intended to function as an umbrella for the three different entities.
