Mark Almlie got their new logo design by running a design contest:
Not your ordinary church logo: looking for artsy, out of the box, elegant, or old world designs

We are a church of 300 people in sunny Southern California. We are an Evangelical, Protestant Church open to new ideas and who love Jesus and have four core values: meaning, beauty, truth, grace. The church is in Simi Valley, CA. Our terrible looking website (that we will redo after we get a new logo) is www.simicovenant.org
Logo types to explore
So, two concept ideas to start with. A winery/old world themed logo that says "Simi Covenant" on one line and "c h u r c h" on the second line. I was thinking of a stylized looking line to separate first line from second line with the very small wording of "est. 30 AD" (the year Christianity started) in the middle of the line. A two toned yellow/gold (distressed like the mike klung painting if possible--if it looks aesthetically pleasing ultimately of course) and a brown color (like IMG 2160 color scheme above). For the image, I was thinking of rounded squares like the iphone app logos (see 216 MRTI logo above). Inside each of the four rounded squares, I would like stylized icons for our four core values: meaning, beauty, truth, grace. For the first rounded square of "meaning" i was thinking of rodin's "the thinker" statue--if you can put the word "meaning" with another image great. for the second square I was thinking 'beauty' could be a paint brush and palette. for the third square 'truth' i was thinking of the particular cross in the "Christ Church" logo I have attached above (a wide looking cross). for the fourth square and the word 'grace' i was thinking of a descending dove (see img large watermarked above). Now, I was thinking the four rounded squares with images in each of them could be directly above "Simi Covenant"......or, all four of them could be combined to form one large rounded square with 4 quadrants and in that case placed at the left hand side of the letters. second logo concept: more the web 2.0 modern looking logo (the city church logo attached in design brief is cool and artsy). so artsy but hip...the average age in our church, however, is 50 and I'm 38 and want to get our church a little younger, but our church logo can't look high schoolish. 3rd logo concept: surprise me! maybe I just don't know what I don't know :) 90% of the work will be creating the icon/graphic and the lettering and color scheme to match the words "simi covenant church". 5% of the work will be keeping the same graphic/color scheme/etc but just using the words "Simi Cov" on first line and then "Simi Covenant Church" on second line....I.e. we are expanding our name to include our nickname which is "Simi Cov". 5% of the work will be the same graphic/icon/same color scheme but just the graphic and the words "Simi Cov" Ready. Set. Go! May the best design win! Rev. Mark Almlie M.Div
