This is a recognition program being developed for the province of Ontario (Canada), to encourage communities of all sizes, from small rural towns to large cities to be walk friendly. What is a walk friendly community? It is welcoming, alive, and vibrant. It invites people of all ages and abilities to stroll, wander, shop, meet, relax, and enjoy. Features of a walk friendly community are amenitities like lighting, shade trees, landscaping, benches, public art, attractive buildings, and good design including crosswalks, wide sidewalks, trails, traffic calming and pedestrian-only streets. It means you can easily and safely get to and from home to work, shop, and play.
We will be awarding communities across Ontario with a bronze, silver, gold, or platinum designation. This program is modelled after the American Walk Friendly Communities program (http://www.walkfriendly.org) and the Bike Friendly Communities program (http://www.bikeleague.org/programs/…mmunities/).
