Dfutrell got their new logo design by running a design contest:
Help Marc Lerner Foundation with a new logo

Community & Non-Profit
Non profit foundation to combat military suicide, created in honor of Marc Lerner. Foundation will pair Iraq/Afghanistan veterans who are no longer in the military with currently serving troops returning home from deployment in a mentor/mentee relationship. Pairs will meet in person, talk over video chat, phone, and email on a weekly basis to assist in the soldier's transition home. We will be working to get recent veterans to join up as mentors, and will work with military units to get mentees. (we will not likely use the words mentor/mentee in the final iteration). We want this to have a very professional image, and though the logo can subtly allude to the military, we don't want it to look super-military.
Logo types to explore
Marc was a special forces soldier who committed suicide. Ok, but not necessary, to incorporate subtle imagery from these in the logo. I also don't want this to look too military-like. I don't want the logo to be in the shape of a "tab". 1. http://www.pamplin.net/Special-Forces_9/gfx/sf-crest-1.gif 2. http://0.tqn.com/d/usmilitary/1/0/F/Z/Image52.gif 3. http://media.photobucket.com/image/recent/Kvisler/cpx_SFpatch2.jpg Ok, but not necessary, to include lighting bolt(s) or arrow(s) in the logo. If arrows, don't cross them like in the special forces image. No knives. The blue color that you should try to match is the blue in image 3 above, if you use blue at all. If you use yellow, it should also match the same image. I'm leaning towards no yellow though, but I'll leave it open as an option for now.

And then… they selected a winner!
Andsproject did such an amazing job from the very first image submitted. He really captured the brief and picked up on nuances that I hadn't even thought to request. It was a true work of art. When I provided feedback that the first image, while stunning, was a bit off base in terms of what I was looking for with the brand. After providing my comments, he came back with another design that was 90 percent there. We focused on one area in particular and after a few more tweaks, it was perfect. He was highly responsive and did not need a ton of direction. I would absolutely hire him again.
Along the way, they met lots of talented designers…
