(Not sure this is considered a slogan) Hand Raised, Tide Crafted, Sustainable
I am working to become a female oyster farmer in The Great South Bay, New York. I am just starting out on this adventure, and I need to start the branding process. Right now, I am working on my Instagram page. As time goes on, I will need a website, Facebook page, packaging, labels, signs, hats, t-shirts, aprons, etc.. I am working hard to keep costs down, as I am investing personally into my business to start and oysters take a long time to grow. I am working to acquire funding and grants to grow the business, but it will take time. I understand how important marketing and branding is and want to be extremely professional. I believe every detail matters and intend to take this business very far. I am 42 years old. I live on Fire Island with my husband, son and dog. I love to be on the water, looking to challenge myself as I get older and play a part in something incredibly amazing. I can send you a short video news interview about my story and recent newspaper article, if that helps. Little Sister Oysters. I chose this name to honor family. I am the youngest of 6 kids, so I am forever the little sister. When I told them the idea, they loved it so much, there was no way I could disappoint them after that! It's a catchy name for any oyster, sweet and endearing, and also represents women without being over the top. There is a nurturing aspect about farming oysters, they start as babies and need a lot of love, which I feel the brand name helps represent that, as well. However, the work is tough, dirty and primal! It can be a battle on the water. Weather can be harsh. I think we are all capable of so much more than we think, so I am ready to find out what I am truly made of. This is a monumental moment in my life, for so many reasons. Shellfish farming is extremely beneficial to the environment. Oysters are the star of the show. They are delicious, nutritious, simple, pure and they filter 30-50 gallons of water every day. An extreme environmental benefit. They are also a keystone species, and if we can restore the oyster reefs in the bay we can reestablish one of the most diverse ecosystems in the world. Part of my work will be science based. We are working on a kelp pilot program to test how well kelp will grow in the bay. Kelp is being used in many different ways. From beauty products and food, to clothing. Our work is vital to the health of the bay, all the water on Earth and future solutions for sustainability. Programs like this are taking place in many places and we keep picking up speed. Education will also be a part of my business. We are working to involve school kids, visits to the farm and various other ways to get the word out and connect people directly to the environment. Help them make the changes necessary. I plan to use my branding and marketing in order to make all of this happen. Connect people to this, market and sell oysters and eventually other shellfish and kelp. Also to support other farmers, educate, inform and truly make a difference. I am also a mom who wants a brighter future for her son. I love science and nature. I have a deep connection to the water, and live and breathe it every single day. I am not afraid of hard, physical work. I am looking forward to getting my hands dirty. I am so grateful I get to help the environment in this way. I am very spiritual and feel that the universe is on my side. Was the too much? I started writing and just couldn't stop. It's not my best work but think I got all the info out you could possibly need! Business isn't personal, they said. Ha!
I recently got some unexpected attention in the news, so I am eager to get branding and marketing in order, starting with the logo. That will set the tone for everything else. Even though I will not have an oyster to market for 3-4 years, they take years to grow, I need to move on this due to the news story and keep the momentum going, continue the story. However, I understand and respect your craft and do not want to rush creativity, so there is no rush. However, I would greatly appreciate some dedicated attention to this project that means so much to me. Thank you for taking the time to look this over, you are now part of the story, too, and I am sure it will be hard to decide on one design! I am really looking forward to seeing your work!

And then… they selected a winner!
This was the first time my firm used 99designs so I was not sure about the process or if I would be able to find a designer that could convey the vision I had for our new logo design. It was a tough decision but, we finally settled on una.design.com.
Ivana at una.design.com was so accommodating, informative, willing to take direction and answer all of my questions. She provided all the logo files I needed and did an excellent job on the Brand Guide. I look forward to possibly working with her in the future! I would highly recommend her!
Along the way, they met lots of talented designers…
