Calusa Oyster got their new logo design by running a design contest:
Design an awesome logo for Florida's newest gulfcoast, sustainable family run Oyster Farm
Check out Calusa Oyster's Logo design contest…
Calusa Oyster Company is a Tampa Bay Florida based, sustainable, family aquaculture company that grows and sells our farm raised, gulf oysters to distributors, chefs, restaurants, and the retail consumer. Calusa is named in honor of the Calusa Indians, Florida's Native American Indian tribe that ruled the southwestern coast and are known as the "Shell Indians." They were the only Native American tribe in the US to subsist from the sea and not the land.
UPDATE - Additional Ideas - NEW 5/12 - In addition to the original brief we are adding a couple of initial influences that can be incorporated into your design if you choose. Initially, we wanted to cast a wide net to see what ideas might come in that we might not have thought about. The Skyway Bridge is part of the backdrop to the farm and if it works in your design that's great. It doesn't have to be the main focus or even in the design to be the winner. The old Florida style hotel key is a badge shape we haven't really seen before. It fits the old Florida style and again if it fits your design or can that's great also. A weathered font/image is also a look we like. The other two are stacked designs that are simple and where we were going initially be fore we decided to look for a more detailed/imagery option. Thanks so much. Best regards. Original brief - Calusa Oysters are premium oysters grown on the water surface at a Gulf of Mexico family farm. The oysters are not bottom grown so it would be best to avoid any rakes or tongs imagery. We prefer not to see oyster bag imagery or mermaids either please. While we are open to a round shaped logo design our initial thoughts were to explore other logo shapes as well since there are many oyster companies with round logos. While we are not looking for Native American imagery to be the main focus of the logo design we are open to subtle elements that are a nod to the Calusa heritage. Native American imagery is not a requirement for the logo design to be the winner. Calusa is a start up so we are open to all ideas we just wanted to let you know the history behind the name. Hand drawn elements or imagery is okay as well.
