"Building Citizens for Better Community" - or "Serving Across the Divide"
Community & Non-Profit
Community Corps is a locally started but nationally scalable initiative that invites and enables America’s youngest citizens (14-22) to succeed in life by participating in a unique “service camp” and follow-on local community programs that (a) bring people from different political and socio-economic backgrounds together who would otherwise not meet (“red”-“blue”, white-black, rural-urban, rich-poor); (b) provide essential ‘rights of passage’ for youth to grow by working together to endure and overcome challenges together; (c) direct the energy and attitudes of young people to pursue their passions in the service of their community as they make more informed choices about their own future education, work and place in society; and (d) offer communities throughout the country a localized playbook and achievable program that over time creates standards and expectations for what it means to be an American citizen (this is a “bottom up” approach to building national service into our way of life). The product is better citizens, of all stripes, and a greater sense of share purpose across different communities that have become increasingly divided. “Side benefits” include the delivery of community service projects as well as measurable preparation and self-improvement of individual corps members for other opportunities in life (school, work). Community Corps will help foster and build a sense of collective identity among participants that does not obscure other sources of personal identity but rather reinforces the shared identity we all have as members of our community and nation.
