Games & Recreational
Background: I have patent pending status on a set of board games used for study purposes for children. I've used them myself over the last several years while teaching ESL, tutoring, working at after school programs, and as an in school CYW. Now I am looking to have it manufactured and put on the market. I need it looking polished and like something that customers will want to own. So I need someone to take the feel of my selected images (which were made with online clip art) and use them to inspire original artwork. This includes, designing playing cards and board game. As mentioned, I already have my version of all of these, now I need a professional to make it look professional.
What's your vision?
Project: I've enclosed pictures of all characters and cards to be made new and more impressive - and for you to put your own touch on them. Keep in mind it is for children in Kindergarten to Grade Five, so ages 5-11. I'd also like to add that in my experience working with kids - younger kids will like what older kids like, but not necessarily the other way around. So I want it "kiddy", but just the right amount.
***Jan. 9, Final Update*** Hey everyone, Just wanted to say a proper thank you to everyone for joining and submitting such great work. It was tough timing with this contest because I started it a week before Christmas and the Holidays so it effected my availabiltiy and I'm sure yours as well. But I have been impressed what can be achieved with minimal direction. I'm also aware that I have taken up a lot of time on this staying in the first stage so long, mainly because I left for the Holidays for two weeks after Christmas, - the first week I was unable to provide any feedback, and last week only minimal due to where I was traveling. Ad as designers you can only give so much time to a contest and have many more to take part in as well. But now that I am home and with modern comforts I can really focus on this and move forward. As such I will be moving on almost for certain on Tuesday, and choosing the finalists. So today I am going back and providing more detailed comments to those who I feel are in the running for the finalist positions. And I will continue to do that as designs are submitted now that I can focus on this full time. I will also be adding 4 and 5 star ratings to show you if you are in the running or not, so that you can ask for feedback, make changes, etc. I understand it is the weekend though, and i do not like the idea of people working weekends unless they want to, so I will extend the time just a little more so that interested designers can have all of Monday as well to submit updates, but that will be the last day for submissions almost for certain. Then Tuesday I will choose finalists, and leave Tuesday to Friday for designers to submit for the next stage, and will provide prompt and detailed feedback before choosing a winner on Friday ideally. At that point this person will have time to fine tune them now that they know they will be paid for their time and also be offered the next two projects - ie. the game board and the logo/box graphics. This may lead to website graphics and other game graphics if the winner is interested, or these may be offered in other contests or one on one projects depending on the circumstance at that time. And this is part of the reason I have really taken my time with this to get the right person from the start before progressing more quickly. One thing I want to add for clarity to assist all past and new designs is this: I really liked the cartoon style of the examples I have included from the start, but I want more texture in that style. By that I mean, more shades and more depth. This is probably not the correct design terminology, so feel free to ask for clarity, but what I am looking for is a good mix of cartoon drawing and coloring style like the examples that is simple and clean but with lots of character. But polished with a little more graphics look to it and more detail and texture. Character is very very important as well. Some designers have submitted a great image, but with not much character or the wrong character. And it's a better use of your time to follow the examples and descriptions provided with them in the slides closely, and then add more depth and of course your own style as well. Like a 50% mix of example based, and 50% more polished/texture/graphic looks, etc. And of course with your own take and style mixed in there. I hope this helps, and if it does not I am going to be checking often until Monday to answer any questions. Thank you again for your time and interest, Kevin ***Apologies: Leaving for travel one week without Internet access, will be back Jan. 2nd or 3rd to resume.*** Update: Contest Extended Very impressed with the designs that have been coming in. Thanks very much to everyone for entering, and also for your patience. The contest has been remaining in the first stage for over a week now, and I apologize for that. This has been mainly because I did not receive many submissions at the beginning of the contest, perhaps because I launched it right before a weekend, but I think more than anything because it is a busy time of year for most. Starting today I will be traveling and will not be able to access internet for a week. I have checked in with 99 Designs and let them know, and the contest will be deemed as "inactive" when I do not log in for a few days in a row, however that does not mean it is cancelled. Designers will still be able to submit designs, however I will not be able to leave comments during this time. I will be able to access internet again around Jan.2 or 3, and at that time the contest will resume as usual, and will most likely move quickly into the second stage. Thank you again everyone for taking part, especially those of you have took part from the beginning of the week. I really appreciate your patience and the great work you have sent in. Thanks, and Happy Holidays, Kevin In the mean time, please pay close attention to the new attachment edits when submitting designs. The focus is on designs in characters that show personality/character/feelings, as these are things that tend to engage children. Future Projects: Besides receiving $399 Canadian for this work (minus 99designs percentage), the winner will immediately also be given the project to complete my full version of the board game with the goal of completion by mid January. At that point, I will also be giving this person first chance at the next project to - create the company logo and front package scene. I also have other versions of the games, that I hope roll out in 2015, and I most likely will be going with the same Designer for those as well. ***Updated Note***: The instructions included in the pages below have been updated with more detail for clarity as requested by Designers. Thanks for submitting; looking forward to seeing your work!
