Entertainment & The Arts
A science fantasy novel series chronicling the adventures and struggles of a young woman exiled from her solar-powered city and into sunless deserts beyond. This climate fiction fantasy series shows the dramatic cost of keeping Earth sustainable—or at least maintaining that image for many millions of people. The target audience for Sunkeeper is readers of fantasy novels aged 16-30 who are concerned about the climate and follow sustainable topics to learn how to do their part in contributing to Earth's real-world climate change response actions.
What's your vision?
Updated Brief: This design is: - A movie-style poster of fiction characters from an ecological fantasy story. Instructions: 1: Download the template and visual mockup (TCCPOSTER_12x18) from the attachments, and any other attachments that will help you. 1.2: (All "contracted work" is artwork I own the rights to, purchased from artists. You can use elements of that art in the design if you would like.) 2: Do your best to include most of the elements mentioned in this brief, within reason. 3: Upload in-progress work for helpful feedback! 4: The qualifying round has been extended, it will now close on June 28th. Now's your chance! Read the new brief below for more simple requirements. ABOUT THE SERIES: A story about a big clash between a solar-powered future city on Earth and a dark city in the desert full of moon witches who use crystals to cast magic spells. Also, there's a large tribe of ocean-dwellers who are caught in between them and don't know who to help in the big fight. - THE DESIGN - IMAGINE: a vertical-oriented movie poster with three main visual and colored areas: 1. A green, bright, nature-looking top left portion (look up "solarpunk" for inspiration) 2. A moonlit, magical, dark, gray-and-purple, desert-looking portion on the top right (look up "lunarpunk" for inspiration) 3. An aquatic, ocean coast-seeming area on the bottom, taking up a bit less space. (Look up "tidalpunk" for inspiration) Each of these three areas has a vague backdrop that matches the vibe mentioned above (solarpunk, lunarpunk, and tidalpunk) - CHARACTERS - ~ SOLAR AREA (top-left of poster): 1 Required Character ~ - Kota Vahl, a brown-skinned young woman with natural African-American-inspired hair (but medium to short length) and wearing an outfit inspired by "Solarpunk fashion". She is looking to the right, and her head is up a little because of her optimism. She has an "eye overlay" over her right eye, kind of like a phone screen. She looks determined and heroic. Her clothing might be battered and torn a bit from all the fighting and traveling through the desert. She is the main character. ~ THE LUNAR AREA (top-right of poster): 1 Required Character, 2 Optional ~ - Empress Odessa, a powerful lunar witch queen looking slightly downward and straight forward. She is the ruler of nine large magical witch coven societies. She's in her 20's. She is vengeful and wants to prove herself as strong and powerful and important. She has short hair, if her hair would be visible under any dark witchy crowns, jewelry, etc. She is large on the poster design, shown from the chest or neck up. + OPTIONAL CHARACTER: - Greyson Kearney, a young attractive white man, age 26-29, shown in the upper-middle of the poster, waist-up and smaller than Kota and Empress Odessa. He is secretly in love with Kota on the left, and avoiding Empress Odessa on the right. He could be looking back fearfully while running away to the left area. He is a computer systems administrator and technology technician in "male lunarpunk style clothes" + OPTIONAL CHARACTER: - Malicia Hawkes, a very, very old "death witch" whose life has been extended by magic. She looks old yet strong. She would be very small, in the background standing in the dark deserts. She would be casting magic spells with a pale green crystal in her hand which causes a pale green magical glow. She looks angry, hateful, vengeful. She might even be screaming or shouting out of disgust because of Kota Vahl, the main character. If you can fit this character in, it would be great, but she is optional. ~ THE OCEAN COAST AREA (bottom of the poster): 2 Required Characters ~ - Meilani Netweaver, an ocean-dwelling tribeswoman leading a resistance within her large tribe of fellow ocean-dwellers called Tidae. She's a young, muscled woman wearing "tidalpunk" clothing and accessories (or try Polynesian fashion and jewelery but remember she is more a warrior. The place she lives is very hot so she won't have much clothing on, but please do not make her sexualized. She is in an action pose, maybe hand high in the air, and maybe a net that she had woven in her other hand, ready to be thrown for fishing or in battle. She trusts Kota Vahl and the Solar people and tries to get her fellow Tidae people to follow along and help her cause. - Fetu Shoalwalker, an appointed ruler of a large portion of the Tidae people. He is a strong, large man in his 30's who looks like a bit like a polynesian warrior or tribesman. He is looking up to Empress Odessa and wants his people to trust her, and not Kota Vahl or her solar people. He is disappointed in Meilani and all of the Tidae who follow her and Kota to help the solar people who have made life so tragic for their people on the shores of the solar city. Probably just his face is shown, or torso, with a faded bottom half to allow for the background to be seen. He furrows his brow at the rebellion of his own people If all of those things are featured in your poster design, you may have a winning submission in the works! You have three extended days to work on your submission. Don't worry about any text. See the References Section for a more step-by-step instruction on how to craft a winning design. First, check the mockup poster I made showing the general idea, attached below, called TCCPOSTER_12X18) Next, make sure you're using the DESIGN TEMPLATE, also attached below, as your basis for working on the file, unless you have a better approach that keeps the project on spec. It's just a simple template from Patreon, which is one of the places this poster design will be available. Next, reference my character and scene descriptions above to essentially do a much better job than what my mockup does. Finally, do your thing! Check the attachments for other movie posters that I personally liked the overall look and feel of as a guide toward what I might deem a winning design. I understand this design's budget doesn't demand the same quality as those blockbuster film poster designs, but make it your goal to create artwork that people would be proud of having hung on their walls when company comes over. If you can meet that level of overall visual quality (as opposed to my awful visual mockup, lol), you may have a winning design in the works and proceed to round two! To get some further inspiration, here is a playlist of "ambience videos" of scenes from this story world. You can get a sense of the visual feel and varying locations of this story world by skimming through these videos. https://sunkeeper.link/scenevideos You should have enough now (especially with the mockup image) to understand the vision of the product. Entries which make it to round two will have additional time for revisions, if I understand the 99Designs rules correctly. Thanks and best of luck to all! Up to 6 designers will move to the second round sometime around the 28th of June (check the timer on the brief for accurate time deadline.) - Emmett
