The highly rated GUNFINGER game App Icon design

What inspires you and how do you envision the design for your business?
We would like to replace the current app icon for our game GUNFINGER with one which is more appealing to the audience and better communicates the content and tone of the game.
The game is light-hearted zombie action shooter with innovative aiming game play based around tapping and holding the the screen to shoot. It is currently available for free download on the App Store (Apple devices) and the Windows Store.
GUNFINGER was released a few weeks ago and was downloaded over 1/2 million times in the first week. The icon you create will potentially be seen by these users and many more over the coming months. We will also add the winners 99designs alias to our game credits (optional if you'd prefer not to be included).

We think it's important to convey the action shooting and humour of the game more so than the zombies (the current icon uses a zombie head). The icon can include a gun/s but should potentially be more stylised than realistic. Not much is serious in the game, and we don't want to suggest the game is realistic. We did some early tests combining guns with fingers, which may be a potential direction.
More feedback and direction will be given during the contest.
Other notes
To give a bit more clarity we want to to convey the shooting action of the game, not the zombies. Our current icon uses a zombie and we want to move away from the suggestion that Gunfinger is another zombie game.
So thing that probably shouldn't be included in the icon:
- Zombies
- Screenshots from the game
- Game name or any other text. We already have a logo for the game title.
The icon needs to be legible at a smaller sizes (i.e. on a phone) and look good at larger sizes on desktop screens. The App Icon needs to stand out when included alongside icons from other apps, and should be clear and crisp. It shot not use too many different colours.
Example elements that could be included (but not restricted too):
- gun/gun
- gun sights
- targets
- bullet holes
- some combination of a gun and a finger (see our early concept)
- some way of illustrating the tap to shoot gameplay
