Entertainment & The Arts
This is a memoir and its target audience includes people interested in its author and the good work he's done during his long life on the Big Island of Hawai‘i, which has to do with grass roots politics and anti-poverty programs in these small town rural communities.
What's your vision?
This memoir, written by a man in his late 80s, recalls his long life spent working not to earn money for himself but to get programs in place to help impoverished people. The cover illustration, of his hometown Hilo Bay, was painted by his sister, and an inside page explains: "The price of a fishing rod that helps put food on the dinner table year-round is equal to the cost of buying fish for a single family dinner." This could be his motto. Through his grantwriting work and the grass roots efforts he got together, he brought many millions of dollars into Hilo and helped elect the political candidates that supported anti-poverty programs. He got programs in place that helped generations of families with homes, jobs, medical care, and educations. He is still working, and still doing this, in his late 80s. I don't have specific color, design or font concepts for the cover but welcome your vision. Help us make this look great. It should be light and positive, as opposed to dark or depressing. The front cover needs to include these three elements: 1) Memoir of a War on Poverty in Paradise 2) by George Yokoyama and 3) the painting as illustration (attached) On the back cover, the blurb should read like this: George Yokoyama lived in Hawai‘i when World War II was beginning, and he was a bit of a teen delinquent. He punched his Hilo High School principal one day, and as the principal was on the draft board the high school junior soon found himself in the U.S. Army. That led to some growing up and a one-time meeting with a Japanese man he knew only as “Sensei” (“Teacher”), who taught him an important life-long lesson. In Yokoyama’s memoir, written in his 80s while he still worked, he recalls many decades back home in Hawai‘i working behind the scenes to get programs passed – and politicians, who supported those programs, elected – to help the economically disadvantaged; especially Hawaiians, because he never forgot the important and unexpected message he received from Sensei. (And below the blurb, please put his bio): George Yokoyama, born in 1926, started working for the Hawai‘i County Economic Opportunity Council in 1971. At bottom left on the back cover, in smaller type: Memoir of a War on Poverty in Paradise Memoir ISBN: Price: $ (Note to designer: Please note that the word "Hawai‘i" has an ‘okina between the two letters "i," which is an diacritical mark used in the Hawaiian language and is not the same as an apostrophe. On a Mac, it's made by holding down the "option key" plus "right bracket." I don't know how to make it on a PC. The accuracy of this matters to us.)
This book will be published as a 6x9 paperback through CreateSpace. It is 213 pages. Please put the title and author's name on the spine.
