Entertainment & The Arts
I write and edit books for a global audience.
What's your vision?
I need a cover for a book which has a front cover of 15.24cm wide by 22.86cm high, or 6” x 9”. The finished cover will need to include the correct width of spine, a front and rear cover, and allow for a 3mm bleed all round. Any artwork should extend to the outer edge of the bleed area. The book in question is a family saga set in South Africa between 1914 and 1946. It features a remote trading store, plains of veld and a mountain in the background, and has romance and mystery at its heart. I need a cover that will represent the romance, intrigue and mystery of the theme as well as get across that it is set in Africa in the first half of the twentieth century. It needs to be eye-catching as a thumbnail, and have font that is large and clearly legible as a thumbnail. Besides the CYMK pdf for the print version, I’ll also need a 300dpi jpeg or png file suitable for Kindle and online promotions, as well as a 1600 x 2400 jpeg or png file suitable for Smashwords. Title: Chameleon Author: Kathy Stewart Front cover text: Shortlisted for the Crime Writers Association Debut Dagger Award in the UK in 2010. Back cover blurb: Romance, suspense, an absorbing family saga set against a background of intrigue, mystery and war in the violent depths of Africa. In 1914, troops mass for war in Europe. At a remote trading store in Transkei, South Africa, the Moss family and their sometimes-guest Richard feel the impact on their lives. Richard enlists, taking young Fred Moss with him. His parents are furious, afraid for Fred, but fourteen-year-old sister Eve is shattered, her hopes of eloping with Richard dashed. All she has to remember him by is a strange wooden mannikin ... Follow Eve’s journey as she tries to uncover the truth surrounding Richard’s life and sudden disappearance. Experience the clash of cultures as the fortunes of two families collide with catastrophic consequences. Chameleon was shortlisted for the Crime Writers Association Debut Dagger Award in the UK in 2010. The woman in the story is 14 in 1914. She is tall, slim, with long dark hair and blue-grey eyes. Her love interest is a man of 24 in 1914. He has dark hair and blue eyes. Both have fair skin. The man has a chestnut horse with four white socks but you don't need to show this if you don't want to. He is also called the Chameleon because he changes his identity a few times, so if you'd like to incorporate a chameleon or a chameleon's eye into the design somewhere that's also fine. I realize that you might not be able to incorporate all the ideas into a cover but I hope they might spark some ideas.

Gordan designed my book cover. His design was in a group of about 50 submissions. It stood out among the rest of them and also mirrored my design brief. Working with Gordan is a pleasure on every level. He is a real pro. I can't recommend him highly enough. He deserves a perfect 10 score from me.
Along the way, they met lots of talented designers…
