What's your vision?
A book cover for "The Deadly Wizard Games" by Scott Spotson, including a back cover. The back cover will say, ****** What happens when Wizards take over the world, uniting five continents and vowing a better utopia for all? Seeking liaisons to their new subjects--Mortals as the Wizards call them--the new rulers seek five humans, one per continent. For North America, it's Amanda Fullerton who is chosen by the ruling quartet of Wizards--Indie, Demus, Regi, and Justica. The Wizards revere several mystic tenets of their civilization, one of them being competitions of magic, which demand cunning and strength. As such, the Wizard Games offer Amanda insight into their ways, as she seeks to learn about the Wizards as much as possible, but this incredible magic also brings danger. Caught between the Wizards and the Mortals, Amanda finds herself playing both sides until the day arrives when the fate of the entire world is at stake. And in her hands. ****** This is a Young Adult novel, so please keep that in mind. The intended readership is from 12 to 18 years old. I have an old cover but I wish a new one (the title has been changed and it has been revised from adult fantasy to young adult fantasy). I will try uploading this cover so you can see it... the Wizards govern their subjects from up high in the sky, amidst the clouds, and they sit on invisible chairs, and there are two young men, and two young women. They all wear black pants, and the two men--one wears a yellow long sleeved shirt, and the other wears a red long sleeved shirt. For the two women, same idea, but one is blue and the other is purple. The blue one is Mexican, so she is Hispanic. When up in the sky making decisions for the people below, they sit in a square-like perimeter, in corners, but you cannot see any square, it is just the idea of how they meet--no tables or props. One contestant asked me: - How old are the characters? Answer: the characters are all 22 years old. - Is it a paperback on Createspace? Yes. It is 5.06" by 7.81". For the spine, it is about 450 pages. Also, the red-shirted male wizard is like a tall, slender movie star-looking guy with long/brown hair. The yellow-shirted male wizard is a bit shorter, more stocky, and has a dark black hair crew cut. The purple-shirted female wizard has long brown hair, with curls at her shoulders. The blue-shirted female wizard, as said, is Mexican, so she has darker skin and straight long back hair. Amanda herself also has long brown hair and wears normal clothes for a pretty and well-grounded 22-year-old (she's a university student) but is modest in her taste of clothes, sometimes wearing dresses. Of course, I don't expect all five characters on the same cover! The Wizard look exactly look like humans, except they wear those color-themed outfits, which have turtle-neck like collars.
I have several Wizard games that you can illustrate. 1. There are huge steel balls laid out in a grid of ten by ten, almost touching each other. Each rotating ball is about eight feet in diameter. The Wizards have to jump from the top of each ball from one to another, keeping their balance. Each ball rotates in a different direction, but of course you won't be able to show that, but you can show it is a very difficult game to keep balance. 2. There are ten orbs in the sky, all clear glass and half full of water, like a swimming pool. They float, sometimes one up higher, and one off in the distance, they are randomly arranged in the sky. Amanda and Demus (the red-shirted male wizard) has to jump from one hovering pool to another, and by magic, a transparent glass slide can form from one pool to another lower down, with water rushing on it. 3. Amanda and Demus (red-shirted male wizard) are on a carousel with several strange creatures as "horses" with poles bobbing up and down, and they look sinister... minotaur, dragon, unicorn, hippogryph, and so on... I have all 13 names if you need them. 4. The Wizard like to do duels and they create magic. Sometimes they wrestle each other using daggers or crossbows and bolts (they do not harm but can create points) or flying tackles and they can teleport anywhere. In some duels they create monsters to fight another Wizard like a large sinister robotic man with dark exterior and a mask-like face with green eyes, or a black giant scorpion, on one fight, the yellow-shirted male Wizard rides it on its back, trying to stab it in the back with a dagger. 5. In one frightening scene, Amanda is trapped in a giant Rubik's cube where it is transparent enough to see her, but you know it's the colours of a Rubik's cube. The cube is about twice her height. Demus (red-shirted male wizard) is revolving the images to solve the cube, while Regi fights him off (yellow-shirted male wizard). 6. Or, in general, try the old cover again but in a better way, or show them using magic, you don't have to use the specific examples above, although they are in the story. The important thing is to show the magic and that there's a game going on. 7. As you can see in the cover sample below, on the back cover image there is a statue of a Wizard God that rises from the floor with a lava bed in the shape of a circle. You don't have to do this again for the new back cover, but this is also in the story. If I am please with the quality of designs to date, I would be inclined to guarantee the prize, as I have for the past three contests.
