The Fine Art of Deception is a Paranormal Romance Mystery and I'm looking for a book cover to reflect dark mystery, intrigue, sexiness, and the pursuit of power. I want the cover to be our best marketing piece, to pull the reader in and make them want to read the book. I'll ultimately need an ebook and a print cover. The print size will most likely be 7.81 x 5.6. Author name will be under the pen name Alyssa Richards.
As an example, I like this cover :
Cover of City of Lost Souls (Mortal Instruments) Book Five
which shows a couple in embrace at the top and a darkened cityscape at the bottom.
A cover that shows a similar type of layout, with a couple in a heated embrace, with a dark and mysterious NYC cityscape at the bottom would be great. I think I’d rather not show the faces or the hair color of the couple. Though if some long, blonde hair is shown from the woman, that would be okay. Her long, blonde hair and pale skin is mentioned in the book. The male is also Caucasian.
Keep in mind that City of Lost Souls (the example above) is written for a young adult audience. So the virtual models used on that cover would be a little young for my book, which will be read by mostly adult women. Still, the models should be idealistically young and sexy. The two main characters in the book are in their early 30s.
There is a theme of past lives, past loves reconnecting and past life memories resurrecting throughout the book. There is the theme that love never dies, but also that enemies might not either, so mystery, intrigue and danger is important to represent. Some wispy lines or smoky lines weaving around the characters might be interesting to imply a connection throughout time. You may have other ideas as to how to represent that connection through time.
As another example, this cover also has a nice cityscape at the bottom:
Though I'm not 100% certain that this example would work, it's an alternative idea where the cityscape or elements of it are behind the characters. In terms of imagery, fine art is a central and fundamental theme throughout the book, The Isabella Gardener Museum in Boston is important, more specifically the pieces stolen from it 1990. (Vermeer, Degas, Renoir, Rembrandt, et al)
There is also an angry ghost that is present throughout the book as well. Some ghostly image in the background of a young (20s-ish) brown hair, bangs swept to the side guy might be interesting. He needs to look menacing.
