Book Blurb: Christine Jenkins, a high school teacher, has never heard of Kinyarwanda or Kigali when she decides to mentor two Rwandan refugees, Sonia and Eugene. But she has a plan. She’ll help the teenage siblings, who have no family of their own in the United States. In turn, they’ll make her proud and everyone will live happily ever after. Christine’s stumbling attempt to overcome cultural barriers comes in the form of awkward conversations, fake smiles, material gifts. And lasagna. Lots of lasagna. Her plan limps along – until Sonia’s unexpected pregnancy, Eugene’s detachment, and her own mother’s cancer throws her off course. No amount of planning or organizing can restore her previous notions of security and control. As she slowly discovers what’s most important, Eugene and Sonia gift her with lessons of faith and resilience – and how to find joy in unexpected places. Fake Smiles and Lasagna is the story of the transformative power of unlikely friendships.
What's your vision?
A book cover. I think I'd like a simple design with bright orange-red tones, though I am open to other ideas. I do not want pictures of lasagna or smiles, please :).
There is an ocean theme in the book, but it is not necessary to include on cover. The beach was a place I brought the refugees to, and it comes up in many contexts.
