A quick note on how I’ll use stars: 1 STAR: If you presented several designs, I’ll use one star to identify the approach I am least interested in. 2 STARS: Needs a little more work before I think it can be shown side-by-side with other designs. 3 STARS: I like it and I'm polling it. 4 STARS: More than half of the people polled said they liked it. 5 STARS: Everyone polled thought it was strong. I need a book cover for a series called The Undergods. Imagine a world where Southern California has been gutted by earthquakes, and Reno, Nevada has emerged as the unlikely Mecca for the Green movement. For the past fifteen years, intellectuals, inventors, activists, and the affluent have been gathering in “the biggest little city in the world.” Currently the city’s building are 20% new, with 80% old (current) buildings slated to be torn down and rebuilt. Also gathering in Reno, are those who wish to control the technology of the future. These people call themselves gods, and they are fully invested in retaining power at all costs. There are also six “undergods” who were once part of the "gods" system, but who now fight against their rise. So that is the premise of the story. As far as the cover I need, I'm thinking of something visually interesting that also orients the reader in the setting. I always hesitate in telling artists what to do. It’s like telling a writer how to write. So know that I am open to ideas other than what I describe below. But brilliant curveballs aside, , but I will almost certainly approve an really eyecatching version of one of the following: Option 1: The current Reno skyline (can be stylized) with futuristic, “cleaner” buildings. Basically think of something the city would use to attract tourism or new residents. The image should really make you want to go there. Option 2: If you want to put two full skylines (old and new), then 80% of the future skyline should have a blueprint effect—but not old school blueprint, more like the schematics are drawn in light. Again, imagine this as a bit of a propaganda piece, making you want to see the final result. Option 3: Another direction could be to infuse a little bit of the supernatural (pure science is indecipherable from magic) into the cover by using a Yggdrasil tree rather than a futuristic skyline. You could go with more tattoo-like imagery, or more cosmic-like imagery by turning a nebula into a tree shape (see how example in attached image below). If you have no idea what I'm talking about here, don't worry about it. This is just an option. A Yggdrasil tree is carved into The Undergods' table, so it's a symbol that can be incorporated if you're looking for inspiration. ;) Option 4: I just added really minimal mockups of each character's emblem. These will be chapter headers, but they could also be incorporated into the cover in lieu of the silhouettes. Not required, but an option, if you're feeling inspired. So those are options my writer brain comes up with, but again, I’m not closed minded. Most of the best things I’ve ever seen have been things I never would have thought of, so there’s that… ;) Just keep in mind that I'm looking for visual interest, flow, and balance. It also doesn't have to be literal. As long as the styling carries through (or can be carried through at the next phase), I'm totally open to different approaches.
Know that I am open to ideas. If you see something in my description that triggers a different direction you want to pitch, I'd say go for it (some of the best things happen when artists spitball). The attached files represent what my writer's brain imagines working well. If you want to pitch a quick sketch of something else, bring it. Also, I don't have the attached image as a layered image, but if you want to do something different with the silhouettes, then I do have the individual cutouts. Let me know if you need them. Also, assume 6"X9" layout. This will initially be an ebook, but I need the cover printable (minimum 300 dpi). Also, two reference images that give a general impression of color and building contrast I am looking for here are below, just in case that helps you get a start. Old (current) Reno: https://www.google.com/search?q=reno+skyline+night&espv=2&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=odKVVPHxEYayyATvzIHABQ&ved=0CB0QsAQ New growth: http://twistedsifter.com/2012/02/picture-of-the-day-shanghai-skyline-at-night/ ONE BIG NOTE: If you choose to marry a different skyline, in the end I won't want it to be a straight up copy of a current city, like Shanghai or Dubai or another city people will recognize. Ultimately, the new growth should be altered so it isn't an outright replica.
