What's your vision?
I'm looking for a cover for my novel 'Earworm', which will be published in print using Amazon Createspace and digitally on Amazon Kindle and Apple iBooks. The book tells the story of what happens when a major record company works out a way of computer-generating music and selling it to fans, without telling them it's computer-generated. One of the themes is the demise of the music industry as we know it, and there's a mystery element as the characters try to work out what's going on. The main characters in the book are two musicians who are slogging away in day jobs and struggling to get anyone to listen to their music; an aging glam rock band; the geek who creates the software; and the record label boss. The tone of the book is mostly fun and lighthearted (there are lots of jokes at the expense of musicians and the music business), but there's also a love interest and a few moments of darkness. The book was previously published under the name University of Death and got great reviews from music magazines. For this project, I'm publishing it on Amazon and Kindle for the first time. I've attached the first two chapters to this brief. You can learn more about the book and read reviews of the first edition here: http://www.sean.co.uk/books/universityofdeath/index.shtm. Please ignore the old cover: it's not an example of what I like and it doesn't represent the story well.
I'd like a design that attracts people who are passionate about rock and pop music. Something that appeals to music fans who are not necessarily musicians would be ideal. I'd also like a design that looks professional and inspires confidence in the quality of the writing inside. The real bands in the book are rock and guitar-led, although one of them also uses a synth. Something that conveys the energy of a live performance, without putting faces on the characters, might work well. Also something more graphic-design led might work well. I don't have fixed ideas about how this should work and am excited to see your interpretations. It's okay to hint at the technology elements of the story (they're a big part of it), but it needs to look like a novel about music, not a book about technology. I also write non-fiction books about tech, so this needs to be visually distinctive from them. I don't think any literal interpretations of 'earworm' will work - so no real worms, please. Please use clear typography for the title "Earworm" and the author's name "Sean McManus". Both should be clearly legible when the cover is viewed as a thumbnail on Amazon. Please ensure the book cover meets the specifications for Amazon Createspace and Amazon Kindle publishing. The book is for adult readers, not children. I'm happy to take any questions about any element of this project or the book content. If you're not sure about something, please do ask: I'm happy to help. I appreciate your your time in taking part in this contest. Thank you.
