The title of the novel is: Diffusion This novel is written for a broad audience, readers who love survival/adventure stories and stories of fantastic discoveries. It is not hard science fiction or space opera, but it does involve a group of people discovering an artifact sent long ago from a distant alien civilization. Although the novel is written primarily for adults, some of the characters are teenagers, and the book should also appeal to teen readers. There are two protagonists: Quentin (40 years old) and Bobby (14 years old). The story takes place in Papua (the western half of the island of New Guinea), where two teachers (Quentin and his wife) and several students crash into a remote rainforest. The story is about their survival efforts, but also about their encounter with an isolated tribe of Papuans who are guarding an artifact that actually turns out to be a conscious entity sent from a distant alien civilization. The story is infused with a sense of wonder, and I would like the cover to reflect that.
What's your vision?
I need both an ebook cover image and a print cover, for Kindle and CreateSpace, and for using in general advertising and marketing for the book. Print cover: The book trim size is 5.5” x 8.5”, on white pages for CreateSpace, and is 218 pages (spine should be .49 inches). The only text I want on the front cover (and spine) is the title (Diffusion) and the author (Stan C. Smith). Possible “a novel by” above the author name. For the back of the print edition: Tagline to go (in bold) above or below the book blurb: "What would you sacrifice to bring to light the greatest discovery in human history?" Then the book blurb: "Quentin Darnell was only a boy when his anthropologist parents were overcome by a professional failure so crushing it led to his father’s eventual suicide. Now a schoolteacher he’s looking for answers, and senses they can only be found in the wild terrains of Indonesian Papua. He leads his wife, son and six students on an educational expedition in search of the world’s most pristine environments and isolated aboriginal tribes. But political unrest is brewing and when disaster strikes Quentin is faced with a loss so unthinkable, the dark mysteries of the past quickly become irrelevant. Trapped in a vicious fight to protect the ones he loves, Quentin is on the brink of discovering a secret with the power to save lives, and change the destiny of humanity forever." And near the bottom of the back, the author’s web address: http://www.stancsmith.com Here are my ideas for the design: I don’t want images of people, unless it is a close-up of a person’s eye or part of a face. Perhaps an eye that could belong to a native Papuan (facial features are very similar to Australian Aborigines). Perhaps the eye, or part of the face, peeking out of dense tropical vegetation. I am hoping for a specific atmosphere… a dark, dense, dangerous, mysterious tropical forest where something amazing is hidden (it is actually hidden high in the canopy of a massive tree). An important creature in the story is a tree kangaroo (a few photos are attached for reference). This creature was actually created by the alien artifact to help it communicate with the native Papuans. So perhaps this creature could be shown on a tree limb, or peeking out from dense tropical foliage (particularly if it appears to be looking directly at us, as if it were intelligent). Here are some existing covers that I like: http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61XTEvhHoEL.jpg This is a fiction book, but I like the mysterious look of the forest. I don’t particularly like the white text. http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51CXXENAWSL.jpg I like this one a lot, although I’m not sure about the fonts. If this had a tree kangaroo looking out at us, it would be terrific! http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51%2BBzNu8qpL._SX331_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg I like the rainforest background, and the concept of the eye is interesting. http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/91u6luqfIsL.jpg This creates the mysterious atmosphere that I like. http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51fy7sZzOSL._SX342_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg It’s not essential, but it would be interesting if the cover had something that hints that the story includes an element of sci-fi alien contact. The image in the eye on this cover kind of does that. http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51ulfXIIGxL._SX331_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg Again, this one gives a nice sense of a mysterious tropical forest.
I also have a sequel to this novel, and I hope to have the same designer create a second cover for that book. Thank you to the designers who submit potential covers. I very much appreciate your efforts. I will review the designs every day during the submission period. If I like a design, I will provide feedback. If a design is eliminated without feedback, please feel free to submit another concept. Thanks!
