Update on Original Brief: The designers can absolutely try another concept and as long as it fits the story, and is of a quality that is commensurate with the novel, I would love to see what you can create. I am not a designer, and I am completely open to any ideas. I can post the cover blurb, if that will help and maybe try to identify the various elements I wanted in the cover. ----------------- Cover Blurb: "A mysterious plague sweeps across Sarond. In the wake of devastation, Riatha, one of the last Elven Archmages, takes advantage of the chaos and with the help of some unexpected allies sets in motion a plan to restore the former glory of the once mighty elves. Excommunicated and sentenced to death for refusing to purge a new mage, Joelle, a cleric of Alequan, discards all that is safe and familiar in her life. On the run, she must confront the truth of not only her religion, but all that she once believed. While Joelle is confronting the lies of her old life, a simple shipwright named Sarco must smuggle a fledgling mage into a city under siege from the inside. Three lives rising from the ashes. Three destinies awakening." ------------ My initial thought was to have Joelle and Riatha depicted in the cover. So I thought to combine their worlds. Joelle makes a journey through frozen mountains, Riatha takes over one of the largest cities on the continent. Joelle, the cleric, is never in the city where Riatha, is, so she would never be where the burning city is. Their paths converge in a more mystical fashion, crystalline threads of magic bind them together. If you want to incorporate that somehow, and it could be done in a tasteful fashion, feel free. BUT. I want the cover to depict their journey, not focus on the magic. So, the idea was to have both mountains and a burning city on the front, where one sort of merged into the other. The idea was to have these be more of a background, with the two women laid overtop them and up close. On one side, have the mountains and snow, and the other, the burning city. On the burning city side, Riatha, the Elven mage would be there - in shadow, in full color, in profile, in the image of a flame - any of these would work. I'm open to all of the ideas, or even one I may not have mentioned. Things you might like to know: She's blue, has scales on her neck, wears a gown or robes, usually silver. She's elegant, poised, and strong. There is one scene where she wields a mace. She has long, dark hair. Sometimes braided, sometimes pinned loosely on her head, sometimes falling down her back. The idea was to have her gown, long and flowing, merge into the snow scene and the folds of the gown create rifts in the snow. Again, this was just my initial thought. Within one of those paths, would be Joelle. A cleric no longer, and on the run. She has an inner strength. She's not beaten. However she is depicted needs to say, 'You can't keep me down!' I thought maybe she could be rising up from a kneeling position? Or walking, but holding her head up high? We might need to see her face to see the determination? You might like to know: She's average height, brown shoulder length hair, always tousled, violet eyes. No scars on face. She wears two necklaces. One is a round coin, smooth, thick. The other is a religious/magical pendant with a blue teardrop in the middle. Your choice what, if any, of that you want to incorporate. Since the legacies arise from the ashes, I thought some of the ash from the burning city could be larger. Coming towards the reader. **** And, with all of that said, do you as a designer have a different idea? If so, I'm open to it. Do you think the burning city by itself is a stronger image? Great! Designers are free to take the information I provided and submit their own ideas for what makes a good cover. If one of you wants to create the burning city only, feel free. If another wants to showcase Riatha, go for it, or some other scene, or image, or combination thereof. Any and all ideas are open for consideration.I hope this helps and gives you a better idea of the story. If you need anything else, or would like any other details, please feel free to ask away =). -------- Original Brief: I need a cover for a fantasy novel titled Awakening: The Ashborne Legacy. The book is about an excommunicated cleric who is fleeing a death sentence, a megalomaniac elf warrior-mage, a corrupt man-made religion and a brother just trying to protect his sister. In the background there should be a scene of a snow-covered, forested mountainside which morphs into an image of a walled city in flames. On the flaming side, one or two large flecks of ash could be shown up close, and a profile of a elf, tall, blue-skinned, long black hair, shimmering scales on her neck in a silver gown. The silver gown would bleed over into the snow side of the cover and turn into snow. In the snowy landscape, would be an image of a woman wearing a simple woolen tunic/cloak, seen from afar, walking through the snow, leaving a trail (would be cool if the trail turned into the one of the folds of the dress). I would need a front and back cover. I need one version that works for e-publishing and one for print (it can be the same one, as long as it works for both formats).
There will be the usual text blurb on the back.
