What's your vision?
Book cover design (to include spine and back cover) for: Guardians of The Scroll by Steven Loveridge. The book is a fantasy adventure story for 8-12 year old children (middle grade fiction). The book is a sequel to The Palace Library (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/148017663X/). More information about the book can be found at http://thepalacelibrary.com. The cover needs to have a similar feel to The Palace Libray cover and to share typography, so that it feels part of a series. There will be further sequels and the chance to build a longer term relationship Fonts used are: FairydustB (in the title) Trajan Pro Garamond The winner of the contest will be asked to prepare versions for use as an ebook cover (Kindle and other formats), for CreateSpace and for Ligthning Source in both paperback and hardback POD versions. PAPERBACK: 8" x 5 1/4". The Amazon KINDLE height to width ratio is 8:5. Please see the full synopsis of the story in the attachments as well as a draft cover blurb and then please refer to the notes below. A jpeg of the full cover of The Palace Library is attached for reference. GRAPHICAL ELEMENTS FOR THE COVER: • THE SCROLL is central to the story and to the developing series and my inclination is that this should be represented on the cover, but I am happy to accept artistic freedom and other ideas. "“[The Scroll] contains secrets about the creatures of the Nether World. It contains the secrets of how to draw the evil creatures from their lairs, into our world. And it contains the secrets of how to both control and destroy those creatures and the right tools to use. In the wrong hands, it allows evil to dominate the world.” OTHER GRAPHICS FOR THE COVER OR BACK: There are other elements of the story which lend themselves well to graphic representation, especially, for example for a graphic representation on the back rather like the sword on the back of The Palace Library Cover. • A SILVER NECKLACE (which contains a magical translation scroll): They are on a silver chain "simple silver cylinders with a line around the middle and highly engraved with beautiful markings." • THE PTOLMEAIC CAT: (UPDATE - DO NOT USE THE CAT) This is a unique creature, immortal and bound loyally to the bloodline of Ptolemaic family after Alexander’s general killed it. It became known as Pyrros because of the orange fire in its eyes. Its other defining characteristics are its completely retractable sabre teeth and it’s striped coat which changes like a chameleon, sometimes making it almost invisible. It is a fast and lean animal the size of a small cheetah. "It was striped like a tiger - but the stripes were a glowing yellow ochre and dark brown, like the shading in a desert. Yet when she looked at the animal’s back legs again, they were the shadowy grey colour." • THE WHITE PHOENIX: This bird is is going to recur throughout the series. We see it being in an old fireplace near the beginning of the story: "From green, the flames turned to blue, and then to red, and then suddenly the bird stretched out and stood up with its wings either side of it, fanning the last of the flames into a serious fire. The bird looked as if it were bathing in the flames. This wasn't the little, frail bird that Harry had seen. This was a much bigger bird. And this bird was pure, brilliant white with a wingspan that stretched towards the sides of the chimney breast." ** Please note: I would don't want to have the children who are the heroes of the story on the cover. Added 7 August: I would like my name to be consistently branded at the bottom of the cover in a similar way to The Palace Library. Fire is a consistent theme throughout the book. Obvioulsy the Phoenix is reborn is fire. I also talk about the Hydra and Greek Fire in the synopsis. I should add that The Library of Alexandria in is burnt by Caesar in this novel. Ancient scrolls would be read with wooden scrolls at the left and right, not at the top and bottom.
