The Dietrich von Hildebrand Legacy Project is the leading organization in the world dedicated to the presentation and dissemination of the thought and witness of Dietrich von Hildebrand. An original philosopher, ardent Christian, fierce foe of Nazism, and fervent champion of beauty, von Hildebrand nevertheless remains too little known today—something the Legacy Project aims to remedy.
Our mission is to foster the broad reception and critical appropriation of von Hildebrand’s religious, political, and especially his philosophical writings. Recognizing that ideas are most fruitful when critically tested, we are committed to bringing von Hildebrand’s seminal ideas into dialogue and debate with contemporary currents of thought.
We believe that Dietrich von Hildebrand’s phenomenological personalism is a unique synthesis of rich human experience and penetrating reflection that can shed new light on enduring human questions. His signature philosophical development, the discovery of value and value-response, enabled him to gain fresh insights into perennial questions—about human flourishing and the moral life, the nature of love, the demands of moral witness, Christian faith and practice, and about the transformative character of beauty.
Dietrich von Hildebrand was a consummate philosopher, yet he did not only write for trained philosophers. His writings address those people, specialist and non-specialist alike, who understand the supreme importance of philosophical questions, people who recognize that philosophy, far from being unrelated to ordinary existence, raises the deepest questions of life.
