Novelist (Sci-Fi) - writing and selling books to customers for entertainment.
What's your vision?
I need a cover for my newest Sci-Fi book. The cover should be made for a real book with frontside and backside. The frontside will also be used for an eBook. Text: On the front there should be the name of the book ("Mirai") and the authors name ("Dennis Maier"). I think the letters should be uppercase but maybe you have some interesting ideas, but I cannot really imagine the front letters in lowercase. Cover: The cover is the real challange. Therefore you need some informations. It's an SciFi book, so it doesn't have to do with any kind of our reality. it should have a futuristic touch, but I don't want a second 'Star Wars'-cover. I want to the left of the book a city in middle of an desert. This city should look like a green garden with higher and lower skyscrapers. Maybe there are also some small buildings. Imagine a city which is very beautiful, modern and green with flowers, trees, and so on ... but not like a city which is in the year 7231, more like a city in 2178. So there are no UFO, deathstars, flyin' cars or something else. It's modern, but not to crazy. It should be more like a little overview, so the city doesn't have to be totally detailed. I like the style of this one: https://privatkino.files.wordpress.com/2013/02/die-bestimmung_tc3b6dliche-wahrheit.jpg There are some decent details, but not to high detail. Maybe the picture is some kind of good example for you. Important is, that I want half of the city on the frontside going to the half of the backside. On the backside it is also possible to see more or maybe the rest of such a futuristic city. On the frontside the reader has to see, that it is a city in the middle of an desert. The desert is dead - means no vegetation. Maybe some old and death trees, one or two destroyed buildings which are half under the sand and some stones. At least the desert shouldn't be just sand and empty. That's not what I want. One detail is a must-have. I want a train like a modern maglev (http://www.newscientist.com/data/images/ns/cms/dn3153/dn3153-1_370.jpg) driving out of the city to the horizont into the desert. The track of the train should also be 3 till 5 meters over the ground. For the perspective: You should see the city, the desert and the sky. How you realize that is creative freedom. I need the whole picture in a real big monitor resolution and of course as .PSD or something like that so that I can write texts on it like the short description. It will be printed on a real book. Amazon and many other sites have also a summary for resolutions of an softcover book or an ebook. Please orientate on that. If the resolution is to small, I can't work with it. An interesting challange will be that I don't know at the moment if the book will have 480 pages. So the lenght of the spine of the book is not fixed at the moment. Maybe you have an very interesting idea. If the cover has a big resolution it also can be possible that it doesn't matter. Style: The cover shouldn't be to dark and it shouldn't be to bright. The reader has to see that the city is modern and beautiful but the desert is deadly. I don't want to say to much here, because this is the challange for you and your creativity. That's the little freedom I give you but don't forget the goals. I wish you fun for this project and many good ideas.
2015/08/03: - As information: I changed the contest into a blind contest which is in my opinion better. - 'Mirai' is japanese and means 'The Future' - I made a little mistake yesterday because of stress, meetings and several people. The book will have 480 pages!

And then… they selected a winner!
This is the second job I've done with Alexandre, "Portugal." This time I didn't do the contest--I knew I wanted Alexandre to do my second cover. He did not disappoint--it is exactly what I asked for and once again he used his expertise and creative eye to make things better than my original request. I also really love how it matches the first cover in a color/font scheme so it looks really professional. This was my first experience asking someone directly to do work and Alexandre was fast, professional, and a delight to work with. I can't recommend his services enough. He is really good at designing book covers!
Along the way, they met lots of talented designers…
We think contests are a super fun way to get design.
