The Seismic Signal
About the author, I am at the edge of autism with a diagnoses for Pervasive Developmental Disorder, aka Atypical Autism. My circumstances, and my family's, have given me a curiosity about the world of communication. Generally I make friends with non-native English speakers, as teaching others was a way for me to connect with them, this book is an extension of that, and I hope it connects with you. A course I attended in Science Communication from Maryland University open a door into this world when I learned about the ABT for writing compelling narrative, I wondered about why these conjunctions AND, BUT, THEREFORE were such compelling words. This is were my journey to find the connection between word stress and understanding in English began. I have a CELTA certificate from Cambridge. It is a qualification for teaching English as a foreign language and I have experience in teaching English in Taiwan and Spain.
The book is for people interested in public speaking but want to learn about the quirks of English, why we speak like we do. It's about the use of stress in English to signal the important relationships and give direction to a discourse making spoken English better understood and more engaging. I discuss English stress in comparison to other languages, phonetics, small words and big words, adverbs, conjunctions, sentence pacing, phonetics and English IPA vowel chart for English. There is also personal experiences and a little on the development of the English language.
Non-native speakers who are near native level but find spoken communication challenging. Spanish speakers transfer the word and sentence stress in their language into English, but English is an isolating language and not a fusional one, it is also more stress timed than Spanish. So it is often the case that Spanish speaker speak flat English and so they are not very well understood, and a point is lost. The book is about implied meaning, implying what the important relationships are so one is understood better. I am looking at targeting professionals, and that the book gives tools and ideas to assist in non-natives giving a presentation in a business setting. Possibly geared more towards Latin language native speakers.
Book cover type
Sorry with each book cover design submitted I re-think what I am doing, because things are not clear. If you have one done, submit it and I will send you a message on how to improve. Show somebody standing in front of Big Ben in London, they are waving they arm and Big Ben is falling over. The British Flag is on top of Big Ben. See the man in the ALPHA book cover on the brief, it might be an idea to use a stick man like that with lines coming of out mouth to indicate the signaling. Maybe show the Shake Drill image also if it can match in. The cover book size will be 6 × 9 in (15 × 23 cm)
