What's your vision?
This is the second book in my series - the Paragon. Please see the contest for my first book here: https://99designs.com/book-cover-design/contests/paragon-412766 The title should be Paragon Book 2: The Vindicators by Whitney J. Cogle Here was the synopsis for book 1: JAY MATTHEWS lives with his dad, GENE and his AUNT VICKI. His mother, he was told, died in a house fire when he was five while he was sleeping at a friend’s house. Jay goes through his methodical existence for years, until he is thirteen years old. His world is turned upside down as NINA enters his life. In the first book: The Black Dog, Jay finds himself being followed by a dog, which hides in the shadows and mysteriously appears and disappears as if by magic. The dog becomes almost like a protector, saving him from the bullying neighbors – BRIAN, SMITH and JAKE. Jay finally finds the dog going underground through an opening in the earth underneath a plastic cover. He follows it and is led through a series of tunnels with strange, monstrous creatures guarding the paths. He passes by these creatures, which seem to have become enchanted by something or someone, and comes to an underground civilization. In it he finds a whole other world filled with strange alien-looking creatures and also human-looking ones. An nine-year-old girl approaches him and takes him to her quarters. There she reveals that she is Nina, the black dog. Nina takes Jay to a place called Underneath the Underground, or the Double U. Nina explains to him that their underground civilization runs under the Rocky Mountains from Canada to Mexico and consists of the Units (the human-looking creatures) and the Grays (the alien-looking ones). She tells him that both races evolved underground and have been there for thousands of years. The Double U is a secret place where the Units go to escape the tyranny of the Gray’s that has occurred since the queen has been imprisoned. Nina introduces him to her mentor, a man in his thirties named DAVID. David and Nina explain to Jay that his mother did not, in fact, die. She was the queen of their nation and was captured and imprisoned for running away and marrying Jay’s dad. They need his help to free her, and he agrees. Here is the Synopsis for Book 2: DAVID – the leader of the Underneath the Underground, a secret organization of Units, is building an army called the Vindicators to defeat the Grays. David says there are to be five leaders of this army, based on a prophecy by OLD MARY, the only elderly Unit ever known to be in the Underground: A Trap Tricker, Decipherer, Swordsman, Sharp Shooter and the Royal One—which is the QUEEN (Jay’s mother). JAY is the last piece of the puzzle David has been looking for—the Swordsman, and he teaches Jay to use an enchanted sword as part of his combat training. NINA, who is the Trap Tricker, is also training with David, who is the Decipherer. KAHL, who works side by side with David is the Sharp Shooter and when they free the queen they will have them all and be ready to take on the Grays and follow the prophecy that will free them from their tyranny. SUNNY, a red-headed girl who dresses very colorfully and has strange, hippie parents moves next door and attaches herself to Jay while being annoying as only Sunny can be. She follows Jay underground without his knowledge and she gets captured by the Grays. In Jay and Nina’s expedition to free her, Jay finds a copy of the Gray’s hidden scroll, which David has told him would hold the key to finding the Queen and defeating the Grays. He steals it and doesn’t tell a soul about it, not even David. It is written in another language and he remembers his friend ISHMAEL, his arch nemesis next door neighbor, who also happens to be a genius, can decode anything. He takes him the book and reluctantly Ishmael agrees to look at it. Once the Grays discover the book missing, Nina tells Jay that they are threatening to kill David if they don’t get the book back. Jay goes to get the book from Ishmael, but after a day with the book Ishmael is fascinated with it, as it reveals a detailed secret plot by the Grays to take over the Earth. Jay tells him the truth about the book—that it is real and they are both in danger. Jay and Ishmael realize they can’t give the book back. They need to decode it all. When Jay goes to explain this to Nina and David, he discovers that David is a Gray. Yet, unbeknownst to Jay, David was part of an experiment concocted by the Grays to create a breed of Gray that could live on the Earth’s surface so they could take over the Earth. It was an experiment gone bad and David is only partially Gray and has had to wear a human disguise, one made of modified human skin, on parts of himself to make himself look like a normal Unit. Jay’s Aunt Vicki was part of this experiment as well, and as far as Jay knows, they are both Grays and he loses trust in them. Jay tells David that his neighbor, Ishmael has decoded the book and they need to keep it until they are able to read it completely. It is then that David realizes that he has chosen the members of the Vindicators incorrectly. Ishmael is actually the Decipherer. David decides that he has gotten it all wrong, and since the Grays will now kill him, assumes that he himself isn’t in the prophecy at all. The bully Brian, Jay’s friend Lydia’s ex-boyfriend, was visited by a Gray in the middle of the night and he believes it was a vision of an angel. The “Angel” tells him that he must bring Jay to him and Brian will receive riches and be able to rule when the “Angel’s” take over Brookfield. He tells Lydia this, who thinks he is crazy and tries to warn Jay. Brian and his bully friends, Thad and Smith try to catch Jay but Jay is too clever for them and gets away. Jay, Ishmael, Lydia and Sunny know that they must leave Brookfield. The book has put them in terrible danger. As it turns out, Ishmael’s mother is a genus as well and has been doing experiments on a new invention in the shed in their backyard—jetpacks. And there are 3 of them. They decide they will have to go up into the mountains and hide out until the book is decoded and they figure out what to do. Nina reluctantly agrees to go with them, although she is very upset knowing that the Gray’s will kill David because of what they are doing. She reveals what David has just told her—that the Queen was pregnant on the day she was captured and taken to her underground cell. The Queen is Nina’s mother also, and Jay’s sister. Angry at Jay for what he has done to David, Nina takes off on a jetpack that Ishmael strapped onto her to demonstrate its use. They all follow her, Ishmael and Lydia on one pack and Jay and Sunny on another, up into the mountains and into hiding. Here is the back cover description for book 2: David is a warrior in the Underground who is putting together an army led by Units with superior powers. Old Mary, who has prophesied about this army, has predicted these leaders but there is still one missing. Because he shares the bloodlines with the queen and has the Paragon, Jay could be the missing piece of the puzzle David has been looking for—his Swordsman, who will help lead his army called the Vindicators into victory over the Grays who have mastered them for so long. As it turns out, the Units aren’t the only ones who have something to lose in this battle. The Grays are not only dangerous to the Units underground, but also to the humans that live on its surface. David and Jay must work together to defeat them or the whole world could be in danger. But, David has a dark secret, which forces Jay and all his friends, Ishmael, Sunny, Lydia and Nina to come together as the weight of saving the world lie on their shoulders. Now a band of misfit kids hold the burden of saving the world from hundreds of thousands of Grays that live under the Earth in the Rocky Mountains. But can they? Is it even possible? Only time will tell. If only they had more of it…
I'm thinking of maybe having Jay - 14 and Nina - 9 on the cover dressed in black with their long swords ready to fight. Maybe have David, the leader of the Vindicators there too - His dark secret is that he is a Gray in disguise. They find this out when Jay, suspicious of him, cuts his shoulder and he bleeds white.
