Author's Website: www.alexlettau.com Book Synopsis: Because the war on drugs is not going well, a new DEA program is created called Extraordinary Operations (“X-Ops”). X-Ops initiates a secret project whereby a lethal Venezuelan hepatitis virus is mixed into heroin, rationalizing that a few deaths from a new type of hepatitis will deter drug abuse in many. Chapter 1 begins in Mississippi when Dr. Kris Jensen, a medical detective with the CDC’s Hepatitis Division, arrives to investigate fatal hepatitis in two drug users. Within 48 hours after an accidental needlestick that exposed her to the blood of a dead drug user, Jensen realizes that she is infected with this unknown virus that causes fatal liver failure 7 days post-exposure. Because she is not yet ill and there is no treatment, she tells no one. Her investigation moves to New Orleans, where two more have died and she is joined by Ed Beaufain, a health department doctor. Heroin that may contain the virus is discovered and sent to CDC for animal studies. The trail of transmission leads to a tattoo parlor where they uncover a web of drug use and revenge murders. X-Ops conspirators shadowing her investigation, try to kill Jensen but fail. A tropical disease pathologist suggests the autopsied liver pathology matches an obscure severe hepatitis reported in a Yachabo Indian from western Venezuela. At CDC, the outbreak investigation is to be discussed at a strategic planning meeting of the Hepatitis Division. However, X-Ops conspirators help arrange for an animal rights extremist, whose radical group is protesting the Hepatitis Division’s research use of animals, to participate in the meeting. He is a suicide bomber. The massive explosions and fire destroy all the lab evidence and kill everyone in Hepatitis except Jensen who had left the meeting suddenly because of her illness. The animal rights extremist is blamed for the bombing. Jensen realizes she cannot help her dead co-workers and secretly leaves Atlanta to continue her investigation in the few days she has left. The FBI finds out that she survived and left the scene, so they pursue Jensen as a possible bombing co-conspirator. Jensen reunites with Beaufain in Houston. She reveals her worsening hepatitis and convinces him to go to Venezuela to investigate the origin of the virus. In Caracas, they meet with Cory Flint, an alcoholic ex-DEA veteran who discloses that a few months earlier he had given information about the hepatitis virus (unaware of its intended use) to X-Ops. Remorseful and wanting to help, Flint, a skilled bush pilot, agrees to fly them to the remote mountain valley in western Venezuela where the infected Yachabo Indian had lived. X-Ops conspirators learn that Jensen and Beaufain flew to Caracas and they hire a local drug gang to kill them. After a gun battle and narrow escape at a small airport near Caracas, Flint, Beaufain and Jensen fly to the western Venezuelan mountains. However, close to their destination their plane is shot down by Columbian guerillas. All survive. Beaufain is intact but Flint has gunshot wounds and a broken leg and Jensen is in shock from her injuries. The guerillas recognize that Jensen has the hepatitis known locally as “the yellow mountain death.” They leave her to die along with Flint and abduct Beaufain as their physician. Local Indians rescue Jensen and Flint from a flash flood and transport them to the local mission hospital. Jensen is treated and temporarily improves. She learns from a Yachabo root healer that some Indians survive the hepatitis and she concludes that a survivor’s plasma might contain life-saving antiviral antibodies. She persuades a hepatitis survivor, whom she hopes has such antibodies, to donate plasma. Meanwhile, Beaufain has convinced the guerillas that their trip was humanitarian to investigate the lethal hepatitis and is released. He arrives at the hospital where Jensen’s liver is failing and she has just received the plasma transfusion. Her condition deteriorates but then, in the night, she starts to recover. However, X-Ops conspirators, who had tracked Flint’s plane, arrive before dawn to kill Jensen, Beaufain, and Flint, but are thwarted and are killed in a gun battle. Flint’s throat is cut and Beaufain is shot but both survive. In the morning US military/medical personnel (alerted by the mission doctor) evacuate them. Flint testifies to bring the remaining X-Ops conspirators to justice.
