I write legal fiction. My target audience is readers who like legal fiction, thrillers, crime novels, and mysteries. This is a cover for my new book, The Death of Distant Stars, A Legal Thriller.
What's your vision?
A book cover design that can be used on for an ebook cover and the same design modified for a paperback. My next book, called The Death of Distant Stars, A Legal Thriller, will be published by me as both an ebook and as a paperback on Amazon. The paperback will be 5.25 (wide) inches by 8 inches (tall) with a 1.5" spine. All three of my novels have had covers from successful contests on 99 designs. You might want to take a look at them on Amazon.com to see the kind of design that appeals to me. Two are women's fiction, but my last book, Dark Moon is a legal thriller. It has an outstanding cover that really captures the genre of the book and used the elements of the story symbolically. I imagine the cover for this book, Distant Stars, centered with a picture of the building here in San Diego where my main character, Hugh Mahoney, has his office. When the book opens, he is the most powerful plaintiff's attorney in the U.S. and his office, in a landmark San Diego office tower, symbolizes his power and achievements. I have attached some stock photos of the building that I think could be worked into a terrific cover. (There may be others out there that I don't know about or find another stock photo of a building you think workds.) The photos I attach are taken at night, and the lighted windows look like the "distant stars" of the title. The building is called the Emerald Shapery Center and it consists of six glass, hexagonal towers that are lighted at night with green lights. It is a hotel/office complex and, as I noted, a landmark in San Diego. All the successful designs in the past have surprised me. So I value your originality and creativity very much. This story is about rich, civil lawyers who are trying a wrongful death case for a beautiful young widow whose husband took a drug made by a major pharmaceutical company that killed him. These are very classy attorneys in a rich, expensive world. So gore and zombie-type covers with dead people and weapons are not going to capture the essence of this story. The themes of these book are power, fall from power, and redemption. I am including a plot synopsis in the next box. The cover should inform the reader that this is a legal thriller, but the cover image should not be merely a cliche. If you want to try something beyond these ideas that I have included below, please feel free. I am looking to convey Hugh's vast power on the cover. Other types of images used on legal fiction included scales (see Dark Moon), courthouses, gavels, and figures in shadow or silhouette. Those are not as appealing to me, but I will certainly consider any and all ideas. Every contest has surprised me (as I said) and there have been a lot of really fine designs making the final choice difficult. If you look at my other books, you will see that I like plain, easy to read fonts for the title and the author's name. The title must include the subtitle to help identify the genre of the book, "The Death of Distant Stars," by Deborah Hawkins (note the spelling of Deborah)
Plot synopsis for the Death of Distant Stars, A Legal Thriller by Deborah Hawkins Kathryn Andrews, a young widow at forty-two, is determined to get justice from Wycliffe Pharmaceutical, the company that manufactured the drug that killed her husband, Tom. Hugh Mahoney, who at fifty-five is the most powerful plaintiff’s attorney in America, agrees to take her wrongful death case. To the world, it appears that Kathryn and Tom had the perfect marriage. But Hugh senses cracks beneath the surface that could derail her suit and plunge his internationally famous law firm, based in San Diego, into bankruptcy. Kathryn clings to the remaining bits and pieces of her life with Tom. She lives in the same house, she sleeps in the same bed, she refuses to move or discard his belongings. She still works as a public defender in the same office where he, too, was a public defender. And, most of all, she guards her dark secret: Tom was in love with her, but he was also in love with another woman. If Wycliffe learns that secret, she has no chance of making Wycliffe pay for Tom’s agonizing death. Attempts to kill her are not enough to deter Kathryn from her goal of making Wycliffe squirm in court for killing Tom. But Hugh becomes increasingly worried as he senses that Kathryn is not telling the truth about her marriage. Hugh’s wife turns up the pressure on Hugh by outing his tawdry affair with one of the firm’s young associates. Tired of years of Hugh’s infidelities, Elizabeth Mahoney demands that Hugh leave law practice and run for the Senate. Hugh is caught between his impossible love for his Kathryn, the one woman in the world he can never have, and Elizabeth’s blackmail. As the trial in Tom’s wrongful death case begins, Hugh believes he can win millions for Kathryn from Wycliffe. But, suddenly Hugh’s key witnesses begin to die off one by one, and Hugh himself is arrested on federal obstruction of justice charges. Humiliated and disgraced, Hugh must face the truth about himself and the end of his empire, while Kathryn’s attempt to make Wycliffe pay for Tom’s death may cost her own life.
