Elementi is very attentive to details, and seems to have a wonderful intuitive understanding of the mood that I want each book cover to convey. This is the second time she's been chosen as the winner of my contests.

How jensfischer26 started their book cover journey
Die Sprache der Zeit
The book is about a successful attorney (mid 40ies, bald, wearing a full beard) , who neglects his wife and child for the sake of success. This leads to divorce. But the day after the divorce he is drawn into a fantastic library that contains billions of books. At the centre of this library there grows a giant tree and between the roots of this tree work the so called “writers”, gnome-like creatures who write time. The protagonist then is forced by a freakishly thin guy with a top hat to open some of these books, which then send him back in time, where he is able to witness important parts of his relationship to his wife. He also sees demon-like manifestations of his lust and greed who control his actions. The main point of this journey is to make him regret his decisions and to see how he made his wife and his little girl suffer because of his behavior. In the library he also encounters hundreds of goblins and slimy “bookworms” who fight to the death.
Even though it's a fantasy novel it is rather dark and almost gothic. The typical reader would be young adult / adult and rather female with a drift to the “dark side”. It is definitely not for kids and the cover needs to reflect that. Don’t get me wrong, it's not horror but it has some juicy parts and I don't want to upset anyone because „the cover looked so cute“.
Book cover type
Don’t know yet
This is my absolute favority of the Design inspirations!
Also very good!
Love this one too, but maybe not as dark!
Like the concept, but a bit to yellowish
This is the apropriate Level of detail, I'm looking for!
What colors do you want to see in your design?
The most important thing for me is that I want the cover either to be drawn or at least appear to be drawn. This said, the cover does not have to be very detailed. In fact it could also be rather schematic. What is way more important is that I want it to look still appealing and to convey the same feelings (fantasy, dark, a bit of romance) when shown as a thumbnail in an online shop.
The German title translates into „The Language of Time“ and there are a couple of elements that play major roles in the novel and that could in one way or the other be integrated into the cover, although not necessarily all of them: A gigantic library with billions of books. A large tree, that grows in the center of said library. A couple, that once where madly in love and have a small child (a girl), but now are divorced. A very large, very thin and also very pale guy, who has short red hair and a long red goatee. He wears a black vest a pinstriped shirt, red tartan pants and, his most characteristic feature, a shabby black top hat that features the feather of an Ibis, see the pictures. A white mythical creature that is a mixture between a lion and an owl. So a bit like a griffin. It also has a lot of gnomes and goblins in it!
On the other hand although the title reads “The Language of Time” there should be no strong focus on clocks. A little clock here or there is fine, but no big one please.
The general mood of the cover should be rather grungy, dark and melancholic, but not depressing or horror like. The overall theme of the book after all is very hopeful!
What to avoid
The name of the Author should not be too big, at least compared to the actual title of the Book, which should definitely be the main focus. But most importantly I will not choose a cover that shows any real photos, photorealistic elements or even too strong 3D effects (with the exception maybe of the title itself). I don't like these things too much and they would not agree with the novel. As said, my favorite will be drawn.
Another importat bit for me is, that the title and the authors name "fit in" or "be part" of the rest of the cover and not look like they were just set on top. I think you know what I mean.
You can use stock imagines, but to be honest, in my opinion most that i have seen so far look too "clean" for my project. But go and show me that I'm wrong! :)
